You could interpret this particular design in different ways. A tattered flag usually has been through a battle or an attack. A tattered flag is a powerful image. It shows that no matter what America/Illinois has come up against, she is still standing because of the brave men and women who love her enough to fight for her. This patch in particular, honors the law enforcement community that are under attack (daily) but continue holding the line even when people don't appreciate them. The Thin Blue Line... Essentially there are three meanings. The Thin Blue line represents the thin line Police Officers walk daily between life and death. The Thin Blue line represents the police officer role of separating the good from the bad while creating order from chaos. The Thin Blue line on black is a memorial or a connection or memory between Officers killed in the line of Duty and those who continue with their duties in the present.
